1. Can you tell us a little about yourself and your connection to Blue Springs?

I currently produce video and motion graphics for CenturyLink and freelance clients. I write, direct, produce, create special effects and edit films for my passion. I had lived in Blue Springs for 21 years and attended Blue Springs South High School.

2. What made you want to be a filmmaker?

Filmmaking is storytelling. Stories permeate every inch of our lives. They feed us courage, fear, despair, hope and everything in between. It’s inspiring to show someone a new perspective of the world by taking them on an emotional yet entertaining journey.

3. What is your latest project about, and where can people see it?

“In Captivity” is about an autistic superhero who struggles to save his love. It won Best Film, Best Editing, Best Special Effects and Honorable Mention for Directing in the (Hampton Roads, Va.) 48 Hour International Film Festival and will screen in the Cannes Film Festival May 21. I wrote and created the special effects; the multi-talented Jon Abrahams (also a BSSHS alumnus) directed. You can watch online at www.ignitionfx.com or www.jpixx.com.

“In Captivity” by JPIXX films from Hampton Roads wins the
International Best Film Prize at the 48 Hour Film Project’s Filmapalooza
TAOS, NEW MEXICO (March 4, 2012) Over 3,500 teams from 100 cities around the world created films in 48 hours for the world’s largest timed film competition. The winning film, “In Captivity”, produced by Hampton Roads filmmakers Jon Abrahams and Jim McCullough took home the International Grand Prize trophy.
The winners were announced on March 8 at a screening and awards ceremony held at the 48 Hour Film Project’s Filmapalooza in connection with the Taos Shorz Film Festival in Taos, New Mexico. Winning filmmakers from as far as Mongolia and Melborne were in attendance.
In cities around the world film teams created their films in just 48 hours. On a Friday night they were assigned a character, prop and line of dialogue to include in the film. They then drew a genre from a hat. The completed films had to be turned in by 7:30 on the dot on Sunday night. Late films were disqualified. The films screened later that week to packed crowds at local theaters.
The winners will receive $3000 cash, a trophy, and their film will screen at the Cannes Film Festival in the Short Film Corner.
The judges for the 2011 48 Hour Film Project were:
• KIMBERLY BROWNING, the founder of the Hollywood Shorts Film Festival

• PETER GILBERT Producer and Director of Photography for the documentary Hoop Dreams
•
• TIM BUNN, winner of the 2011 International 48 Hour Film Project grand prize with London Team, Far From Home.

About the 48 Hour Film Project
The 48 Hour Film Project is the oldest and largest timed film competition in the world. The 48 Hour Film Project’s mission is to advance filmmaking and promote filmmakers. The tight 48-hour deadline puts the focus squarely on the filmmakers, emphasizing creativity and teamwork and “doing” instead of “talking.” The emphasis is also on building communities of local creative people – facilitating making new connections, showcasing skills, and celebrating what creativity and teamwork can accomplish in just one weekend. In 2010, more than 40,000 filmmakers in 80 cities participated in the project.

Update: “In Captivity” was awarded the International Best Film Prize at the 48 Hour Film Project’s Filmapalooza, besting 3,500 films from 100 cities. For their efforts they’re taking home $3,000 and their film will be shown at the Cannes Film Festival.

“There’s not enough time.”

Goodness on a time crunch.

This is a statement that’s heard every day in our hectic lives. It was also the required spoken line within 25 short films premiering at the Naro last month as part of the Hampton Roads 48 Hour Film Project.

48-hours is about the only amount of time my husband, Jon Abrahams of Jpixx Inc., winner of this year’s Hampton Roads 48-hour Film Project, can string together to work on a personal film project this summer. Juggling time between deadlines for work, freelance projects and our new baby, his schedule is packed with all sorts of obligations. Good thing for his inner-artist-voice they make the Project, which forces local filmmakers to finish a film in one weekend. Jon’s not the only one in these “frenzied Facebook times” that needs this push. This year, 25 out of 26 frazzled Hampton Roads teams finished their films, and were screened in front of multiple nights of excited and (more or less) packed Naro audiences. The creative process doesn’t usually flourish quickly – often times, directors re-shoot scenes or tinker their vision to perfection, but with this competition, good or bad, the filmmaking must go on – or risk disqualification.

The rules are simple: a) Create a film in the genre you choose from a hat at the beginning of the process. b) Make sure to use the prescribed prop (this year it was playing cards). c) Have a character with the assigned name (this year it was Tammy or Tam, a poet). d) Make sure a character in your film says the given line (“There’s not enough time” was the chosen dialog this year). e) Get it all within the 48 hour time period.

Sounds easy? Yah. Not really.

A couple of weekends ago about 26 filmmakers gathered with their crews to write, shoot, edit and finish a short film within 48 hours for the Hampton Roads 48 Hour Film Project.

While each team drew a different film genre, the project required all teams to use the same prop (playing cards), character (Tammy or Tam, a poet) and line (“There’s not enough time”).

Of the short films screened over a two day period last week at The Naro in Norfolk, “In Captivity,” a film produced by Jpixx Films, directed, written and edited by Jon Abrahams and starring Isaac Gay, Cory Evans and Chloe Steinberg, won the overall competition. It also received awards for best prop use and editing.

In addition, the audience picked “In Captivity” as the best film for the second day of screenings. They picked “King of the Roosts,” produced by Glorious Wood Cinema, as the best film for the first day of screenings.
